A scanned PDF or a photo of a document is really just a picture — you can see the words, but you cannot select, copy or search them. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) solves this by reading the image and turning it back into real, editable text. FreePDF's OCR tool does this for free, privately, and in 14 languages.
Our OCR pipeline upscales the page, cleans it with grayscale and automatic black-and-white thresholding, straightens tilted scans, and then runs a neural recognition engine for the best possible accuracy. It works on scanned PDFs and on photos taken with your phone, and it supports English, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Spanish, French and German.
Unlike most online services, FreePDF never uploads your documents. The entire OCR (Scanned to Text) process happens inside your own browser using your device’s processor. Your files are not stored, copied, or seen by anyone — which is why FreePDF is safe to use for confidential contracts, medical records, financial statements and other sensitive material. When you close the tab, nothing remains on any server because nothing was ever sent to one.
For the best results, use a clear, well-lit scan or photo and pick the exact language of the document. Mixed-language forms (common in India) work well with the combined options such as 'English + Hindi'. Very blurry or handwritten text is harder for any OCR engine, so a sharper source image always helps.

No OCR is perfect, especially on poor scans or unusual fonts. Ours is highly accurate on clear documents and flags uncertain words so you can quickly fix them.
